HBO compra direitos para documentário Second Life

Latest confirmation that living in reality no longer necessary.
By Kris Pigna.

Second Life is one of the biggest success stories -- and cultural milestones -- in recent gaming history, playing host to real-world classroom lectures, spawning a virtual economy so lucrative it drew the attention of the IRS, and now providing a documentary HBO thinks could win an Academy Award.
Molotov's Dispatches in Search of the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey, also referred to as My Second Life: The Diaries of Molotov Alva on its website www.molotovalva.com, is described by the press release as telling the story of Molotov Alva, who disappeared from his California home and later resurfaced in a series of Second Life video diaries. And here's the metaphysical kicker -- the entire documentary is shot within Second Life, with Molotov Alva being the avatar of the film's real-life director, Douglas Gayeton.

The documentary, comprised of seven mini-episodes, brings Alva/Gayeton into contact with surprisingly seedy aspects of the virtual world as he searches for its creator, including "cyberpunks," "Neo-Luddites," "Sex Slaves," the "King of all Hobos," and perhaps most disconcerting of all, Furries.

"Most people have never actually been inside an online world," says Gayeton in an interview on SubmarineChannel (Submarine is the company that produced the documentary). "...Therefore, documentaries like My Second Life are the only way most people will see what these new worlds are about."

HBO is so confident in the short film, says Cinematical (via RottenTomatoes), that they plan on submitting it for consideration to the Academy Awards in the animated short subject category. Molotov's Dispatches in Search of the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey is 35 minutes long, and is set to air on the premium cable network some time next year. You can watch the first mini-episode on SubmarineChannel now.
